It depicts a young naked woman lying down, with a goat at her feet. This artwork, signed by Ary Bitter, is known as Chloé. It is placed on a large green marble base, which has some signs of aging such as scratches and chips. Ary Bitter was a French sculptor, born in Marseille in 1883.
He entered the School of Fine Arts in Marseille in 1895 and studied sculpture. In 1900, he won the First Prize in the "torso" section. In 1902, he won a competition and joined the School of Fine Arts in Paris, under the guidance of master Barias.He became a member of the Society of French Artists and was awarded a silver medal at the Salon of French artists in 1921, followed by a gold medal in 1924. In 1932, he was honored with the title of Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honour.
Among his most famous works are the Two Lions or The Sun and the Sea and the World and Energy, created for the monumental staircase of Gare Saint Charles in Marseille. He also created numerous animal sculptures, some of which were published by Susse and Les Neveux de J Lehmann. You can find more information about him in the bibliography by B Catley, in the book "Art deco and other figures", on page 45. The sculpture has a height of 25cm and dimensions of 55.5 x 17cm.
