History: The Kharraz family, originally from Andalusia "Murcia" in Spain emigrated to Tunisia in the early 17th century, chose Nabeul for these clay deposits and its ideal geographical location.

The kharraz, or el kharraz which means "gargoulette" in Spanish language, were already master of an important corporation of potters in the Iberian peninsula transferred their knowledge and their tradition in artistic ceramics until there unknown in the country, the zlizes kharraz "maalem" adorned and covered most of the mosques and palaces of tunisia, algeria and libya. The imprint of the first kharraz workshops still exists on the main artery of the city of Nabeul, called "thameur".

The construction of the building is vaulted in the old fashioned way with a courtyard containing two Arab ovens, witnesses of a glorious civilization. The manufacture of pottery and tiles was strictly manual and artisanal. The clay, a basic material for the ceramist, comes from a quarry located at the entrance to the city of Nabeul and extracted with shovel and pickaxe and transported by cart.

Placed in a basin full of water, it becomes slip, then spread on the ground in the open air, it is kneaded under the bare feet of the apprentices. Once firm, it goes to manual kneading to prepare the motte for the manufacture of pottery by means of the walking on foot or the stamping of the tiles by hand.

The products obtained, dried in the open air are then packed in a rudimentary open flame wood oven, at the end of the first firing, the products are glazed, decorated and baked a second time in the final. A large variety of pottery was made dishes, jars, bowls ... The tiles are the symbiosis of two civilizations, the Andalusian by its geometric characteristics and the ottoman by the beautiful floral combinations. Some 40 international honors have honored the kharraz family, among which.

Gold Medal, International Exhibition, Roubaix 1911. Diploma of European Excellence, Paris 1979.
